This is not a project that I am affiliated with but one that support completely. I believe oversight of the police should be handled by the police themselves but rather the city and the people they work for. If you want to learn more or even volunteer to help, click on this link:

“The Police Oversight Project is a group of concerned Austinites who believe police oversight belongs in the hands of the City of Austin and its citizens. We formed as an organization to repeal chapter 143, the state code that blocks civilian oversight of the Austin Police Department by giving police unions their power. In order to repeal Chapter 143 during the May 2021 election we must first get 60,000 petition signatures from Austin voters so we can get it on the ballot. We exist to fulfill this mission.
We want justice, accountability, and reform: Justice for those harmed by police violence, accountability for those who have caused harm, and reform for a police department infected with corruption.
We believe justice requires transparency and accountability to the citizens the justice system is meant to serve. We believe the Austin Police Department (APD), like many police departments across the country, has been allowed to get away with violence against citizens for far too long. We believe the culture created by the Austin Police Association (APA), like many police unions across the country, has shielded bad cops from the consequences of their actions and rendered our elected officials powerless to do anything about it.
We believe oversight is the cornerstone of police justice. All efforts to reform the police will be blocked so long as the city has a binding contract with the Austin Police Association.”
