Electoral College Dropout

Let’s talk about this, shall we? Hear me out. Don’t eyeroll at me! Yes, the electoral college is discussed, at length, every four years. But you know what? Nothing is ever done about it.

So, the main argument I keep hearing for keeping this ancient form of choosing a President is so that big cities and coastal states don’t decide the President for the more rural, midwestern states.

Let me ask you something real quick? Can you name me the main swing states off the top of your head? The ones that always seem to be the swing states and always seem to determine the winner?

Here is a a few: Colorado, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Minnesota. Florida every once in awhile gets tossed in there as one. Virginia pops up from time to time.

But the main swing states? The ones that seemingly decide the election every single year? MIDWESTERN, RURAL STATES.

So tell me…if you really don’t want a few liberal, big states deciding every presidential election, why are you ok with a few rural, more conservative states deciding the election??

Can you explain that to me?

“Well big city liberals don’t speak for us!”

And rural states speak for big cities? Does that sound right?

Do you see how I find that hypocritical?

“Well we don’t want our states to not have a voice!”

YOU HAVE ELECTED STATE OFFICIALS! Last I checked every state, regardless of size or political leaning, had two Senators to represent them. Last I checked each state sent Representatives to Congress.

And last I checked, Californians can’t vote for Ohio’s Senators.

Congress makes the laws, regardless  of who is President. So you have your representation in Congress. You haven’t been left behind. Ohio and Wisconsin Senators and Representatives REPRESENT your rural values in Congress. Your voice is not gone.

Yet a President….a President is supposed to represent everyone. The entire United States. Shouldn’t the President be decided by the voice of the entire area they are supposed to represent? How in the world is it ok that we have a system that could have a candidate win the popular vote by MILLIONS and still not represent the country?

Also, answer me this? How does each state decide which candidate gets their electors?

Give up?

I’ll tell you.

Each state awards electors to pick the President by….wait for it….A POPULAR VOTE!

I am sick and tired of, every single election, it coming down to a few states to choose who the President is. The President represents us all. Period. If we start having people from outside your state voting for your state representatives then I can understand you being worried about your voice being squashed.

But right now, the voice of the majority has been squashed twice in the past five elections. All because of an ancient, flawed system.

The President represents us all.

All of us should choose who that is.

The Electoral College must go.
