“It would have been more comfortable to remain silent.”
-Anita Hill, October 1991
For the many of you who do not discuss politics out loud, whether in public, social media, or outside your comfort zone, you can no longer remain silent. If you go on social media to share photos of your life and block or hide or scroll by the discussions, it is time to make yourself uncomfortable.
Nobody can remain silent anymore, hoping that turning a blind eye will shield you or the ones you love. It may be more comfortable for you to remain silent but the times have forced our hand.
Right now America is spiraling out of control and we must engage in conversation that will make us uncomfortable, make us realize truths we have not wanted to know. We must be willing to consider if the country we love is working as it should.
A country founded in slavery, founded in war. A country founded with inequality among race and sex. A country collapsing under the pressure from the image we portray that we are the greatest country in the world.
If we truly are a country free to choose whether we follow a religion or not then we cannot stand by as one religion forces itself upon the women of our country. Just as we could not stand by as one religion charged that people of color were slaves or the gay community are deviant and unnatural.
We cannot remain silent to those who would pervert and distort a religion to fit their small minds and then thrust that skewed version of their religion into our lives against our will.
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion”
The Supreme Court just allowed states to use their twisted religious beliefs to take away rights from all women.
We cannot and will not remain silent.
And those of you who care about your Christian beliefs and hate to see how it is being manipulated by a radical group of false disciples, you must join in this fight.
You must become uncomfortable.
This is not a fight that anyone should have wanted yet it is here. Hiding from it will not make it go away. You may find you open your eyes too late and find a fallen country. Twisted and torn apart.
And if you do turn towards the fight and find yourself agreeing with what this Supreme Court has done, just know this:
We Will Not Be Silent.
We will fight your disgusting version of Christianity until it is a footnote in history.
