We are literally begging for our lives at this point. It has come to this. We are begging for our lives to people who don’t care to listen. Who won’t listen. Who never listened.
Ten months into this pandemic and we are still fighting over basic science. We are still fighting over rights and freedom and the insane interpretation that because we are American we can do whatever we want, whenever we want. Even if it costs lives.
And now we are begging. Begging you, please, stay home. Please, wear your mask, even if just to humor us. Please, stop demanding we reopen when the numbers are clearly going in the wrong direction.
Yes, we know the economy is hurting. Yes, we know people are hurting. We know this entire thing sucks.
But what choice do we have? We can’t ignore this. We can’t wish it away. No matter how many times you say it is fake or not as bad, that doesn’t change the truth and the science of it.
We are letting the loud voices of the uneducated and delusional drown out everything else. Their shrill call for freedom and their rights has exhausted us, exhausted all of us.
And now we are begging. Begging for anyone to listen. Begging for leadership.
Begging for our lives.
The city of Austin is being hit so hard right now that the entire school system is debating closing down. Not go virtual, but close down completely. The hospitals are full. The mayor just put a curfew on restaurants to help slow the spread.
And what did the Governor of Texas do?
He told the mayor that he can’t do that. He can’t do what is best for his city because the Governor has a personal vendetta against the Mayor and is making a political statement.
Uneducated, ignorant Texans are harassing the governor to open up Texas. Remove mask mandates. Stop living in fear. And he is bending to their will.
My fear of covid-19 is now equal to my fear of the angry mob of false martyrs.
My small town is seeing numbers skyrocket. Hospitals are more full now than ever before during this year. Why? Because restaurants are full. Dance halls are filled with maskless patrons and there is no enforcement of the rules to stop them. People are still debating wearing a mask.
But the truth is….we gave up.
Or gave in.
And now we are begging for mercy.
Please.
Please stop putting our lives at risk so you can do what you want.
And to those with the power to enforce and help those of us who are begging, please, we need you.
People will be angry at you. People will vote against you. People will fight you.
But you will help save lives. And that is worth more than political capital.
I never thought we would go down with the titanic because we refused to believe our
ship could sink.
Yet here we are, the band is playing, the water is rising, and we are stubbornly asking for a drink from a drowning waiter.
Please. Please.
Please.
