I wish we lived in a country where a Donald Trump presidency would never be possible. Not because of anything sinister or illegal or because we changed the rules to block him but because the people of the United States understood that Donald Trump represents everything wrong with our country and chose to not vote for him.
I wish we lived in a country where we took one look at how he treats others and moved on. We would hear his lies and his insults to those who disagree with him and say no, he doesn’t represent us.
We would see how he treats his wives, we would listen to his words when he brags about assaulting women, we would hear the hate spewing from his mouth and he would get nowhere near the presidency.
Yet we don’t live in that country.
I never would have imagined we would live in a country where people would willingly vote for a man who uses tear gas to disperse peaceful protesters so he can take a photograph in front of church, holding a bible. Something, I assure you, he has never read.
I would have cringed at the idea that our country’s president would have a policy of separating immigrant children from their parents at the border and locking them in cages for months. And then not be able to find hundreds of their parents months later.
Stolen, kidnapped children, locked in cages, abused, neglected. And this was policy used purposely as a way to discourage future immigration.
And millions of Americans are ok with that. They justify it. They wrongfully say the last president did the same thing, even when shown evidence that he didn’t.
I wish we lived in a country where locking children in cages as a policy to discourage immigration immediately disqualified someone to be President.
I wish we lived in a country where, when 83,000 Americans test positive for a deadly virus nine months after it started, we would have a President who would lead instead of mock and belittle those trying to stop it.
But we don’t live in that country.
We never did.
We are a highly uneducated, highly selfish, egotistical country.
And I will fight to change that.
I will fight to change the idea that we are great because we have freedom when we have taken freedom from our own people since the beginning of our existence.
I will fight to change the idea that showing compassion is weakness.
I will fight to educate and teach.
I will fight for our country until the moment when all of us actually ARE equal.
There is a monster at the end of this country.
He feeds on anger and ignorance.
He tells you who to blame.
And millions of Americans are ok with that.
They will vote for that.
They keep turning the page of his book.
I wish we lived in a country where people would see the evil that he is and choose to vote for the only candidate that can actually end Trump’s presidency. Even if they don’t agree with that candidates policies. Because they understand that Donald Trump is a threat to our nation. To our way of living.
I wish.
I wish we lived in a country where Donald Trump was not President.
Hopefully, in a few weeks, that wish will come true.
It’s time we tear this page from our history and write a new ending.
